1.0 Bacterial Disease

Very Seldom is bacteria the primary cause of a disease in Koi. It is almost always a secondary infection. Typically the primary cause is poor water quality, parasites or injury to include injury from improper chemical treatments.

There are many times when an antibiotic is required to successfully treat koi, and injectable antibiotics are superior in effectiveness and least harmful to the environment. However, the KHA should check their local and state laws, because in most cases, injectable antibiotics should be obtained and used under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

Koi can be infected with bacteria that will also infect humans. Of particular concern are Mycobacteria which cause Tuberculosis in humans, Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. The KHA should wear gloves and wash hands when handling fish to avoid contagious diseases.
